Jays clip Yankees

Yangervis Solarte hit a tiebreakin­g homer in the eighth inning and Kevin Pillar added an insurance run by stealing second, third and home to send the Blue Jays over the New York Yankees, 5-3, yesterday in Toronto for their first win of the season.

Solarte began the eighth with a deep drive to center field off Dellin Betances for a 4-3 lead. Pillar hit a one-out single and swiped his way to third. The speedy outfielder then broke for the plate with Gift Ngoepe at bat, and Betances threw wildly to the backstop as Pillar scored standing up.

Justin Smoak had three hits on his bobblehead doll day as the Blue Jays denied New York its first 3-0 start since 2003.

Ryan Tepera pitched one ffinning for the win and Roberto Osuna finished for his first save.

Indians 6, Mariners 5 — Yonder Alonso hit his third career grand slam in the first inning, Yan Gomes added a two-run shot and Cleveland held on to beat host Seattle.

Alonso connected off James Paxton, and clubbed his first grand slam since June 6, 2015, when he was with San Diego.

Paxton gave up six earned runs and walked four.

Astros 9, Rangers 3 — In Arlington, Texas, Lance McCullers Jr. struck out 10 in 51⁄3 innings, Carlos Correa and Jake Marisnick hit two-run homers and Houston beat Texas.

Correa and AL MVP Jose Altuve each had four hits and scored twice.

Rangers center fielder Delino DeShields is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after breaking a bone in his left hand while taking a swing during Friday night’s game.

Angels 8, Athletics 3 — Mike Trout had three hits and two RBI, Zack Cozart drove in two runs and Los Angeles topped host Oakland.

Albert Pujols added two hits and two RBI.

Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker gave up three runs and four hits in 52⁄3 innings. He struck out four and walked four.

Twins 6, Orioles 2 — Minnesota righty Kyle Gibson held host Baltimore hitless over six innings before being replaced by Ryan Pressly, who kept the no-hitter intact until the eighth in the victory.

Gibson, Pressly and Gabriel Moya combined on a three-hitter to help Minnesota bounce back from an 11-inning, season-opening loss to the Orioles.

White Sox 4, Royals 3 — Wellington Castillo hit a go-ahead two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning, and Chicago rallied to beat host Kansas City.

National League

Nationals 13, Reds 7 —

Adam Eaton had a solo homer among his careerhigh five hits and Brian Goodwin hit his first career grand slam, Washington routed host Cincinnati.

Eaton had a single, a pair of doubles, a homer and a bases-loaded single in his five at-bats. He scored four times and drove in three runs. Matt Adams had a three-run homer, and Trea Turner added a solo shot.

Stephen Strasburg gave up three runs, one earned, in 61⁄3 innings.

Mets 6, Cardinals 2 — Yoenis Cespedes and Travis d’Arnaud homered, Todd Frazier drove in three runs and host New York defeated St. Louis.

Jacob deGrom fanned seven in 52⁄3 innings, allowing one run and four hits. Jeurys Familia got the last four outs for the save.

Interleagu­e

Pirates-Tigers ppd. — The game between host Detroit and Pittsburgh was postponed because of inclement weather. The game will be part of a split doublehead­er today.
