Mariners rain on Giants opener

-

Mitch Haniger hit a tworun single, Kyle Seager also singled in a run in Seattle’s big first inning, and the Mariners spoiled the Giants’ home opener with a 6-4 interleague win yesterday in San Francisco.

Marco Gonzales (1-0) allowed three runs and six hits in 6B innings.

Joe Panik hit a solo homer and Evan Longoria added a two-run shot for the Giants, the first with his new team.

Panik homered leading off the fourth, his third of the year to account for all San Francisco’s runs to that point. San Francisco became the first team in major league history to score its first three runs of the year on solo homers by the same player, according to Elias. It was Panik’s first homer at AT&T Park since Aug. 28, 2016.

The Mariners answered right back in the fifth, getting Robinson Cano’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly from Guillermo Heredia.

Austin Jackson added a sacrifice fly in his home debut for the Giants, while new right fielder Andrew McCutchen made a snazzy diving catch in the ninth.

Ty Blach (1-1), filling in for injured ace Madison Bumgarner, was done after 4B innings having allowed 10 hits and six runs.

American League

Royals 1, Tigers 0 — Jake Junis took a shutout into the eighth inning, and Kansas City won in Detroit for its first victory of the season.

On a chilly, rainy day — with snow a possibility today — the Tigers and Royals breezed through nine innings in 2 hours, 17 minutes. Jorge Soler, who still doesn’t have a major league hit since July 2, drove in the game’s only run with a sacrifice fly in the second.

Junis (1-0) allowed three hits in seven-plus innings. The 25-year-old right-hander walked one and struck out six before being lifted following Mikie Mahtook’s leadoff single in the eighth.

Blue Jays 14, White Sox 5 — Josh Donaldson and Aledmys Diaz each hit a two-run homer, and host Toronto routed Chicago for its fourth consecutive victory.

Donaldson was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Diaz had three hits before leaving after six innings because of back spasms.

Donaldson and Diaz also went deep in Monday’s night’s 4-2 victory against Chicago. The Blue Jays have hit at least one home run in each of their first six games.

National League

Brewers 5, Cardinals 4 — Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun hit consecutive homers off Dominic Leone with two outs in the ninth, sending host Milwaukee past St. Louis.

Leone (0-1) retired the first two batters, but then lost Yelich on a 2-2 pitch before Braun whacked the next one for his fourth career game-ending homer.

Dan Jennings (1-0) picked up the victory with a perfect ninth.

Braves 13, Nationals 6 — Freddie Freeman and Preston Tucker each hit a three-run homer, and host Atlanta handed Washington its first loss.

Freeman and Tucker each delivered a big blow as Atlanta scored four times in each of the first two innings. Tucker’s drive in the first against A.J. Cole reached the restaurant behind the right field seats, and Freeman cleared the wall in right-center in the second

Mets 2, Phillies 0 — Matt Harvey allowed one hit in five sharp innings in his encouraging season debut, and host New York blanked Philadelphia.

With most seats empty in the 40-degree mist and chill, a healthy-looking Harvey gave the Mets reason to believe he can rebound this year from two terrible seasons interrupted by injury.

Cubs-Reds, ppd. — Stormy weather prompted host Cincinnati to postpone its game against Chicago, the second time during its opening homestand. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 19.
