Lightning beaten in overtime

Elias Lindholm scored 49 seconds into overtime, and the Carolina Hurricanes prevented Tampa Bay from clinching the top spot in the Eastern Conference by beating the Lightning, 3-2, last night in Raleigh, N.C.

Justin Williams had a goal and an assist, Jordan Staal scored a deflected goal and Phil Di Giuseppe had two assists for the Hurricanes.

Ondrej Palat scored the tying goal with 8:49 left and Ryan Callahan also scored for the Lightning, who relinquish­ed control of the Atlantic Division race to the Bruins — who will win the division and claim the top spot in the East if they beat Florida tonight.

Flyers 5, Rangers 0 — Claude Giroux earned his first career hat trick in the regular season, eclipsing 100 points for the season, and host Philadelph­ia clinched its first playoff berth since 2016 by blanking New York.

Capitals 5, Devils 3 — Alex Ovechkin scored twice to finish with an NHL-best 49 goals as host Washington beat New Jersey, which fell to the second wild card slot in the Eastern Conference.

Predators 4, Blue Jackets 2 — Filip Forsberg had a hat trick as host Nashville beat Columbus, which will get the first wild card in the East and play Washington in the playoffs’ first round.

Jets 4, Blackhawks 1 — Andrew Copp scored twice and Connor Hellebuyck set an NHL record for most wins in a season by an American goaltender with his 44th as host Winnipeg beat Chicago.

Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 2— Zach Hyman scored early in the third period, Frederik Andersen made 31 saves to set a franchise mark with his 38th win of the season, and host Toronto beat Montreal.

Panthers 4, Sabres 3 — In Sunrise, Fla., Vincent Trocheck scored late in the third period to help Florida hold off Buffalo.

Islanders 4, Red Wings 3 — John Tavares scored 3:16 into overtime as New York rallied to win in Detroit.
