Sean Gannon, Yarmouth K-9 officer killed on duty, at 32

Sean McNamee Gannon, a Yarmouth police K-9 officer killed in the line of duty, died Thursday at Cape Cod Hospital. He was 32.

He was born in New Bedford. He was a 1999 graduate of All Saints Elementary School and a 2003 graduate of Bishop Stang High School.

He earned a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice at Westfield State University in 2007, a master’s degree with honors in emergency management from Massachuse­tts Maritime Academy in 2011 and graduated from the MBTA Municipal Police Academy.

Mr. Gannon interned with Nantucket police, Westfield police and earned certificat­ions as an EMT and life saving instructor.

He started his career as a member of the campus police at Stonehill College in 2007 before joining the Yarmouth Police Department in 2010.

He was a part of the Emergency Management Unit, a parttime member of the Proactive Anti-Crime Team and was the first K-9 narcotics officer for the Yarmouth Police Department.

His patrol dog was also injured at the scene of the crime.

Mr. Gannon enjoyed travel, working with his hands, donating his time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters and being outside.

He was deeply intuitive, inspired others to be their best selves and leaves a legacy of high moral integrity, infectious humor and collaborat­ive work with colleagues.

He loved spending time with his family and friends.

Mr. Gannon is survived by his wife, Dara (Bryan); his parents, Patrick and Denise; a brother, Timothy; a sister, Martha; a nephew and many relatives and friends.

A vigil will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X, South Yarmouth, and a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be private. Arrangemen­ts by Doane, Beal & Ames, South Dennis.
