Barbara Bush‘s books keep memories alive

- By HERALD STAFF

Former first lady Barbara Bush, who died Tuesday, was known as a champion of reading, and launched the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy in 1989. “The American Dream is about equal opportunity for everyone who works hard. If we don’t give everyone the ability to simply read and write, then we aren’t giving everyone an equal chance to succeed,” she said.

So it’s no surprise Bush was an author in her own right, writing a memoir, and about life after the White House and her dog Millie. You can find her books on Amazon and barnesandnoble.com.

“Millie’s Book: As Dictated to Barbara Bush” (William Morrow & Co., 1990); There was a time when President George H. W. Bush and his wife weren’t the only famous residents at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. White House dog Millie Bush was a hit, and here she “tells” Barbara Bush all about her adventures as first dog.

“Barbara Bush: A Memoir” (Scribner, 1994); The former first lady had quite a life, and shares major and touching events with readers, from her secret engagement to the future president to the loss of her 3-year-old daughter to leukemia, and forging a life in the White House.

“Reflections: Life After the White House” (Scribner, 2003); A decade after President Bush left office, and in the early years of her son George W. Bush’s presidency, Barbara Bush traces the eight years between their terms and discusses her charity work, relationships with her children, grandchildren and her family’s reaction to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
