Sammartino dead at 82

Bruno Sammartino, profession­al wrestling’s “Living Legend” and one of its longest-reigning champions, died yesterday at 82 after being hospitaliz­ed for two months in Pittsburgh.

Sammartino was wrestling’s biggest box office draw in the 1960s and ’70s and held the Worldwide Wrestling Federation championsh­ip for more than 11 years.

Sammartino, who retired in 1987, and the now WWE had a bitter falling out in the late 1980s that lasted until he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.

Mariota re-ups

The Tennessee Titans will exercise their fifth-year option on quarterbac­k Marcus Mariota, keeping him under contract through the 2019 season.

The Titans selected the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner from Oregon with the second overall pick in 2015. Over three years, Mariota has completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 9,476 yards with 58 touchdowns and 34 intercepti­ons . . . .

Record-setting return specialist Devin Hester and running back Matt Forte will sign one-day contracts with the Chicago Bears and retire as members of the organizati­on where they starred and spent their first eight NFL seasons . . . .

The Detroit Lions signed undrafted cornerback Raysean Pringle.

ALS game at Fenway

The Boston College baseball team will host its seventh annual ALS Awareness Game at Fenway Park on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game, played in honor of former captain Pete Frates who was diagnosed with ALS in March 2012, will feature an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup against Florida State and will be televised on ESPNU.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and include the Xaverian-St. John’s Prep game (10:30 a.m.).

All proceeds benefit the Pete Frates Home Health Initiative, a pilot program of the ALS Associatio­n.

Cannons pick No. 1

The Boston Cannons selected faceoff specialist Trevor Baptiste from the University of Denver last night with the first overall pick of the Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft. Baptiste was named to Team USA for the FIL World Lacrosse Championsh­ips this summer . . . .

South Carolina forward and former Louisville recruit Brian Bowen is entering the NBA draft. Bowen won’t hire an agent, so he could return to school. Bowen was suspended by Louisville after news of an alleged payment involving the Cardinals and his father to get him to join that school. Bowen has denied the accusation . . . .

Kentucky sophomore forward Wenyen Gabriel will enter the NBA draft but not hire an agent.
