Joseph Laffey Jr., at 82, of Auburndale, Teamster

Joseph John Laffey Jr. of Auburndale died Monday at the Chetwynde Nursing Home in West Newton. He was 82.

He was born in Rockport and raised in Waltham.

He graduated from Waltham High School and earned a diploma from the Labor School of the University of Massachuse­tts Boston.

Mr. Laffey moved to Auburndale with his family over 45 years ago.

He began his profession­al career as a truck driver for Teamsters Local 25 and quickly moved up as union steward.

He became field representa- tive for the Teamsters Oil Division in 1976.

Mr. Laffey was commission­er of the Local 25 softball league and ran his own “Laffey’s Oilers” team.

He was appointed trustee of the Teamsters Local 25 in 1978 and was the Teamsters Red Cross Blood Bank chairman for 25 years.

He became the union trustee for the Teamsters Health Service Plan in 1985, was on the board of directors for the New England Teamsters Federal Credit Union and ran for business agent and was elected after much encouragem­ent.

He enjoyed playing hockey with his friends, was an avid golfer, enjoyed traveling, loved going to Las Vegas and visited Europe 12 times.

Mr. Laffey is survived by his wife, Veronica “Ronnie” M. (Stascavage); a daughter, Maureen Bills of Victor, N.Y.; a son, Michael J. of Newton; three grandchild­ren; and a greatgrand­son.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Church, Waltham.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
