BMW TURNS OUT A CLASS SIPPER
Nothing sacrificed in big hybrid
Not too long ago, the image of the hybrid car was small, compact, a bit clunky — frankly, a headturner for the wrong reasons.
But times, mercifully, have changed. The 2018 BMW 740e xDrive is one of many nifty cars that turn heads for all the right reasons. With understated Teutonic flair and wonderful driving characteristics, this big Beemer hits all the right notes.
Sliding into the familiar yet comfortable cabin, you’re surrounded by BMW’s hallmark performance heritage. Complete with Dakota leather seats, dual digital gauges and pistol grip shifter, you’re bathed in tasteful luxury the flagship sedan is known for.
Myriad driving modes cover a broad range of performance and economy options, but what is surprising is the whisper quiet of the 2.0-liter twin turbo that’s mated to an electric motor that makes for a combined 322 hp.
Having tested the 6.6-liter, 601-hp, V12-equipped 760i last spring, BMW had the last laugh once I stepped on the gas and the 740e leapt off the line. This fullsized four-door responded like a thoroughbred. Spirited and lively, it seamlessly shifted through the 8-speed
Steptronic transmission and then settled in for a smooth, powerful ride. BMW says the car will hit 60 mph in 5 seconds, impressive for a full-sized car.
A fully charged 9.2 KWh high-voltage lithium battery can run the car for about 20 miles on electric only, with the one drawback being some trunk space for it. Plug your 740e in for an overnight charge or let the battery recharge as you’re driving and you can manage a combined 64 mpg. No worries running on straight gas either as the 2.0 makes for an average of 27 mpg.
Steering is nimble and light with the all-wheeldrive, making in-town maneuvering effortless.
The 740e comes pretty loaded with only a few upgrades available, such as the panoramic sunroof and 19-inch wheels and tips the register at $99,845. The handsomely crafted interior appointments include soft touch surfaces, wood and brushed metal accents, a Harman Kardon sound system, the BMW iDrive with a 10.3-inch touch screen infotainment center, individual climate controls and legroom to spare.
So whether you’re the driver or you’re being driven, this BMW handles all your creature comforts and driving desires with an eye on economy.
