Yanks come of age in victory

-

With a team full of 20-somethings, the Yankees played like seasoned veterans.

Luis Severino pitched three-hit ball over seven innings and the youthful Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-1, yesterday in New York even as prized prospect Gleyber Torres went 0-for-4 in his major league debut.

The 21-year-old Torres, who stranded six runners, played second base and batted eighth in a Yankees lineup that didn’t include a player 30 or older for the first time since Sept. 29, 1989, according to STATS.

Didi Gregorius homered, No. 9 batter Austin Romine laced a two-run double and streaking rookie Miguel Andujar had a career-high four hits, including an RBI double, to help New York take 3-of-4 in the series from its AL East rival.

The 10 players who started for the Yankees, including Severino, averaged 26 years old — the youngest group they’ve fielded since Sept. 26, 1970, STATS said.

Astros 7, White Sox 1 — Jose Altuve hit a go-ahead single in a five-run seventh inning, and visiting Houston stretched its winning streak to six by beating Chicago on the eve of a highprofile AL West matchup with the Angels.

Rays 8, Twins 6 — In St. Petersburg, Fla., slumping Carlos Gomez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep by beating Minnesota.

Rangers 7, Mariners 4 — In Arlington, Texas, Martin Perez and Jake Diekman worked out of bases-loaded jams, and center fielder Delino DeShields had a homer-robbing catch in his first game back in the lineup as Texas beat Seattle.
