Lawn-awaited

Lawn on D’s summer-long schedule to roll out May 1

-

In a sure sign of spring, the Lawn on D — one of the hottest gathering spots in the city — is back for a fifth season with themed parties, movie nights, live bands and Herald Radio.

It all starts May 1 when the 2.7-acre oasis in the Seaport is set to open. A Cinco de Mayo celebration will kick off the first weekend May 4-5 with Latin and Mariachi bands and activities.

Boston Herald Radio will be part of the show on Fridays, broadcasting live from the D Street venue during the day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., for the third year in a row.

The Lawn on D — located adjacent to the Convention Center — saw 300,000-plus visitors last year. Its social media footprint continues to grow, officials say, thanks in large part to the popular oval swings that will glow pink-toblue this year as the night progresses.

“The Lawn on D continues its evolution as an iconic seasonal destination for our neighbors, clients and visitors from everywhere,” said David Gibbons, executive director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority. He added Citizens Bank is back as the chief sponsor.

“Jaws” on D is also cued up, with the screening of the traditional summer flick sponsored in the past by Narragansett Beer. So too are Flannel Fridays and the Guinness & Oyster Fest. Lawn of Champions, with pro teams showing off the winning hardware, along with the Summer Block Party and the Pumpkin Palooza are again on the schedule.

“The Lawn on D has a great feel. It’s also well-lit and contained so it’s safe for children,” said Fred Peterson, convention center deputy director, who added more neighborhood and youth events are being introduced this year.

The food, the bar, the lights, the bands and the cool ocean breeze remain big draws. And the swings. See you on the lawn.
