Man pulled from Barnstable fire dies
An elderly man died at the hospital from injuries sustained in a three-alarm fire this weekend at a home in Barnstable, state fire officials said.
State Fire Marshal’s Office spokeswoman Jennifer Mieth said the fire was under investigation “but does not appear suspicious.”
Firefighters responded Friday night after a person walking by the home reported smoke and flames at the residence, authorities said.
When they arrived, firefighters saw heavy fire coming from a large, older wood-frame house.
There was also a report of occupants who were unaccounted for, according to the Barnstable Fire Department.
A second-alarm was sounded and firefighters found an elderly male in the home who was then transported to Cape Cod Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
“Due to the age and size of the home, the fire was very stubborn to try to extinguish,” authorities said.
Property records show the house is 2,846 square feet.
Hyannis, West Barnstable, Yarmouth and Sandwich fire departments along with the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Department of Fire-Rescue assisted at the scene.
Barnstable police, Barnstable fire and state police assigned to both the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office are investigating, Mieth said.
