Greer lifts Cohasset lax

- By GREG DUDEK Kyle Prudhomme contributed to this report.

Molly Greer was not going to wait for teammates Elle or Jane Hansen to win the game.

Even though the Cohasset girls lacrosse team relies on its superstar sisters for just about everything, Greer asserted herself into a leading role yesterday.

Greer played a huge hand in erasing a five-goal, secondhalf deficit against Wellesley, and then scored the gamewinning goal with 45.5 seconds left in overtime to lift the Skippers to a 10-9 nonleague win at Alumni Field in Cohasset.

“I’ve been holding back a little bit this season,” said Greer, who finished with four goals. “The coaches pushed me and said they needed me. I had to step up.”

After Wellesley (10-1) won possession to start the extra frame, Cohasset (8-1) forced a turnover and looked to set up Elle Hansen, who was held scoreless, for the gamewinning goal.

But Lauren Cunning found Greer alone on the crease and Greer finished off the come-from-behind win.

Greer showed she can be a vital third scoring option alongside the Hansen sisters, and earned the team’s “Hard Hat Award” given out at the conclusion of each game.

“It’s a toughness award and (who) plays just with grit,” said Cohasset coach Kully Reardon. “(Greer) did that. That was hers.”

Wellesley expanded its 6-4 halftime lead by scoring three straight goals to begin the second half. Six different Raiders’ contributed to the scoring attack and Brooke Baker’s terrific feed set up Caitlin Chicoski (three goals) for a 9-4 lead with 19:29 left.

Cohasset responded with two quick goals from Greer before Jane Hansen (four goals) tallied one and set up Maddie Donovan for another. Jane Hansen then leveled the score, 9-9, with 7:00 left before Greer helped Cohasset avoid losing two straight games for the first time since 2014.

“This was a big win for us,” Greer said. “It was a good thing we redeemed ourselves.”
