A man in his 50s was shot dead in a double shooting outside a public housing complex in Jamaica Plain that also left a man in his 20s fighting for his life, police said.

Cops a half block away responded to the shooting about 9:40 p.m. in a courtyard at the Mildred C. Hailey Apartments on Centre Street near the Jackson Square T station, police Commissioner William B. Evans told reporters at the scene.

The cops began CPR and the two victims were rushed to Boston Medical Center. One victim, identified by police only as a man in his mid-50s, was pronounced dead, while the second victim, in his 20s, is in critical condition.

No arrests have been made, and no weapon was recovered from the scene.

The fatal shooting is the city’s 17th homicide this year, Evans said, and about 100 bystanders gathered at the scene made for a hectic encounter with first responders.

“When the officers arrived the crowd was angry and upset, they sort of turned on the officers and the EMT,” Evans said, forcing a captain at the scene to call for backup from across the city.

Evans made an appeal for anyone at the scene who saw what happened to call the department’s tip line.

“We’ll have more retaliation if people don’t step up,” Evans said. “We don’t want further bloodshed.”
