Mary Mullen, at 80, of Cambridge, softball player and coach

Mary “Maizie” Catherine Mullen of Cambridge died Wednesday from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. She was 80.

Ms. Mullen was an incredible athlete who won titles and trophies in bowling and softball.

She was a self-taught pitcher who began her career in softball in the late 1960s.

She managed, coached and played for the Waltham Drifters softball team for 18 years.

Ms. Mullen played throughout the Greater Boston area, the Atlantic coast and traveled to national tournament­s in Texas, Arizona, Utah, Canada and Bermuda.

She was active in local charity events.

Ms. Mullen worked for Loyal Insurance Co. and transferre­d to Colorado before returning to her beloved mother in Somerville.

She found joy traveling to her family’s home in Lisdoonvar­na, Ireland, following her retirement, enjoyed Irish music and delighted in her many grandniece­s and grandnephe­ws who loved their auntie.

She is survived by a sister, Patricia Machado; two brothers, Edward and Frank and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. John the Evangelist Church, Cambridge.

Interment will be in North Cambridge Catholic Cemetery.
