A wrong-way driver was arrested early yesterday morning after nearly hitting a state police cruiser at high speed in Bourne.

Trooper Jeremy Lockwood said he was on patrol when he spotted a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling westbound on Route 25 East in the high-speed lane.

Authorities said they had been receiving calls about an erratic operator traveling northbound over the Bourne Bridge on Route 25 before the driver was spotted.

Lockwood positioned his cruiser in the middle travel lane to alert the driver to stop, state police said, but the driver continued on, narrowly missing the cruiser.

Lockwood crossed over to the westbound side of Route 25 and drove alongside the pickup, state police said, causing the driver to begin stopping.

Lockwood traveled back to the eastbound side and positioned his cruiser in front of the truck to protect oncoming traffic. The pickup then rolled into the front bumper of his cruiser, causing minor damage, police said.

Scott Koziol of Rumford, R.I., was placed under arrest for operating under the influence, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation.

He was released from state police barracks in Bourne on a $40 bail and will be appear in Wareham District Court on Monday.
