A 31-year-old Boston man, held without bail yesterday for allegedly stabbing a man to death in broad daylight Tuesday outside a homeless shelter, was on probation at the time of the killing, prosecutors said.

Jeremy Correa, who was arraigned yesterday in Roxbury Municipal Court in connection with the murder of 50-yearold Edward Sanchez of Boston, pleaded guilty last year to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on ambulance personnel. He was sentenced in November to serve six months of an 18-month sentence, with the balance suspended provided he remain drug- and alcohol-free, undergo drug testing and attend a treatment program, authorities said.

Correa failed to comply with the last condition, said Coria Holland, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Probation Service. On April 9, he stipulated to a violation of his probation, according to court records, but rather than being forced to serve the rest of his sentence, his probation was extended to Jan. 31, 2019.

Shortly after noon Tuesday, less than one month after that hearing, a security camera captured a man later identified as Correa approach Sanchez in the area of Southampton and Atkinson streets and have a brief conversation, Assistant District Attorney Tara Burdman said. As Sanchez begins to walk away, Correa can be seen making a “jabbing motion” toward Sanchez, Burdman said.

The victim tried to run but fell against a parked car, bleeding profusely, then continued to run across the street until he collapsed, she said. He was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he died of his injuries. An autopsy showed that an artery in his leg had been severed, Burdman said.

Correa was arrested the following day after he was identified by a Boston police cadet who saw images of the assailant distributed within the department, Burdman said.
