Plenty of variety in Salem State’s summer offerings

-

Salem State University’s interim dean of graduate studies, Emerson “Tad” Baker, joined Boston Herald Radio’s “Morning Meeting” show yesterday to discuss upcoming summer and fall courses and other programs offered at Salem State.

Q: When do summer classes begin at Salem State?

A:

Our first summer classes start right after graduation. They begin on Monday, May 21. We offer courses in a range of formats — 12week courses, accelerated sixweek courses ... and they also begin on July 9. We have oneweek intensive institutes as well that take place throughout the summer. Online and hybrid courses are available too; we probably have something for you.

Q: Are summer classes at Salem State only for students who are already enrolled there?

A:

Absolutely not! You don’t have to be a Salem State student to take a summer class. We welcome everyone.

Q: Who should take summer classes at Salem State?

A:

Anyone who likes to have an exciting learning experience! We have many students who are home for the summer from college, and they will take a course or two to get ahead in their studies. As an accredited university, our credits are transferable. Others are trying an undergraduate or graduate course for the first time. We actually allow students to “test drive” up to three graduate courses before formally applying to a program. Some people take a class because it helps them in their careers, while others do just because it looks interesting.

Q: What kind of classes, then? What types are offered during the summer?

A:

Almost 400 undergraduate courses in more than 30 departments. There’s a wide range of things to choose from; the flexibility of summer scheduling allows for some really different courses. For example: In History 305, you can help excavate a shipwreck on the Essex County coast. Or you can spend a week learning yoga and meditation in Sports Motion Science 140. Or how about a week in our glassblowing studio in Art 200?

Q: Nice! Those sound like a bunch of fun and not the normal thing you would expect. How do students register for summer classes?
