A Happ-y day for Blue Jays
J.A. Happ reached three times and allowed only two baserunners over seven innings, and the Toronto Blue Jays got their first road victory against the New York Mets, 12-1, on a rainy Wednesday in Queens.
Happ (5-3) struck out 10 while pitching two-hit ball. The left-hander also singled twice and walked in his first multihit game since 2011 when he had two hits for Houston at Citi Field.
Toronto was 0-12 against the Mets in New York, the longest such skid against one team in interleague history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Before the game, the Mets placed Yoenis Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hip flexor, retroactive to Monday.
Phillies 4, Orioles 1 — Nick Pivetta (3-2) tied a career high with 11 strikeouts, Cesar Hernandez homered and Philadelphia beat host Baltimore in a wet interleague matchup.
Philadelphia (24-16) climbed eight games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2011 season.
Pirates 3, White Sox 2 — Pinch-hitter Josh Bell singled to break a seventhinning tie, and streaking Pittsburgh beat visiting Chicago, which matched its worst start since 1948.
Pittsburgh has won 7-of-8 and improved to 10-2 in interleague play this season.
Cardinals 7, Twins 5 — In Minneapolis, Dexter Fowler reached base four times and drove in two runs in his return to the lineup and St. Louis beat former starter Lance Lynn and Minnesota.
Matt Carpenter had three hits after being demoted to seventh in the batting order, and Tommy Pham added two hits, including his eighth homer of the year.
Yankees-Nationals, ppd. — Both games host Washington and New York were supposed to try to complete in a makeshift semi-doubleheader were postponed because of rain.
The two games were rescheduled for June 18.
American League
Indians 6, Tigers 0 — Trevor Bauer (3-3) struck out 10 in eight sparkling innings, and Cleveland won to avoid a three-game sweep in Detroit.
The scuffling Indians lead the AL Central despite a .500 record, and this easy win was certainly welcome after a pair of losses to the injury-plagued Tigers.
Rays 5, Royals 3 — C.J. Cron homered and scored three runs, and visiting Tampa Bay beat Kansas City to complete a threegame sweep.
Rangers 5, Mariners 1 — On the cusp of his 45th birthday, Bartolo Colon (21) laughed off having a line drive hit him in the stomach, allowing four hits in 72⁄3 shutout innings to give visiting Texas a win over Seattle.
National League
Braves 4, Cubs 1 — Ronald Acuna Jr. drove in Ozzie Albies with the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning to send host Atlanta past Chicago.
Carl Edwards Jr. (2-1) allowed five straight baserunners in Atlanta’s threerun eighth, including a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Flowers, without getting an out. Justin Hancock also forced in a run with a walk to Johan Camargo.
Brewers 8, Diamondbacks 2— Travis Shaw, Domingo Santana, Christian Yelich and Tyler Saladino homered in the first four innings off Matt Koch, and Milwaukee routed Arizona to take 2-of-3 in Phoenix.
Marlins 6, Dodgers 5 — Los Angeles erased a fourrun deficit and still lost their sixth game in a row when J.T. Realmuto’s tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning helped host Miami win.
Reds 6, Giants 3 — Scooter Gennett homered a halfinning after the second baseman saved two runs with a diving catch, helping visiting Cincinnati avoid a sweep by San Francisco.
