Trailing by three goals less than five minutes into play, the Duxbury boys lacrosse team felt the first punch thrown by Hingham.

But instead of its Patriot League archrival overtaking them and registering a rare victory against the Dragons, Duxbury showcased the resolve that has become a defining element of the program.

After the slow start, host Duxbury charged ahead, using seven different scorers to upend Hingham for the first time this season, 9-7, yesterday at Chandler Field.

“We’re not a team that gives in at any point and we’re never out of a game,” said Duxbury senior captain Joe Gooley, who scored two goals. “It doesn’t matter how many points they score or how many runs they go on, we’re always going to be with them. That’s what Duxbury lacrosse is and that’s what it has been forever.”

After Marshall Terres put Hingham (14-1) ahead 3-0 just 4:38 in, Duxbury (13-2) responded with five straight goals. Cole Biggins and Will Prouty whittled the deficit to one by the end of the first quarter before Matt Peters, Matt Gill and Brad Backlund each scored to start the second stanza.

Even with Jake Quilty (three goals) shouldering the offensive load, Hingham only got within two on three separate occasions. Quilty scored to make it 8-6 late in the third quarter, but unlike the opening minutes Duxbury answered.

Gooley potted a fourthquarter insurance goal before Duxbury’s stout defense killed off two penalties in the final frame and goalie Teddy Griffin (nine saves) made some timely stops.

“Our guys are competitors,” said Duxbury coach Chris Sweet. “Hingham’s the real deal. We weren’t really looking at their undefeated record. We were just looking at the Patriot League (standings) and bragging rights. It was a great team effort.”

Track

BC High track coach John Normant announced to his team yesterday that he will retire at the end of this, his 50th season.

Normant, who teaches in the math department, is the longest tenured coach in BC High history. His indoor and outdoor track teams have combined to win 23 Catholic Conference titles, and the 2009 state championship.

Reo Shimbori had a threerun double in the third, and Brookline (11-5) never looked back in a 7-2 win over Milton in the Bay State Conference.

In the Merrimack Valley Conference, senior Tyler Stack had a walkoff single in the eighth, giving Billerica (4-10) a 3-2 victory against Tewksbury.

Colby Fitzgibbons’ eighth inning walkoff single propelled Franklin (13-4) over Attleboro, 2-1, in the Hockomock League.
