Bentley prez Larson: I’m graduating, too

Gloria Larson, president of Bentley University for more than a decade, presided over her final commencement yesterday.

“While every year I have to say goodbye to graduating seniors, this year feels a little different to me. This year, I’m graduating, too,” Larson told graduating seniors yesterday. “This is a link we’re going to share forever. The class of 2018 and G Larz, heading off to our next chapter together.”

Appointed in 2007, Larson led Bentley through the Great Recession and spearheaded a significant expansion and renovation on campus. She also oversaw the creation of Bentley’s MBA program, as well as the opening of the Center for Women and Business, which has been renamed in her honor.

Before Bentley, Larson had a lengthy legal and political career, including stints as deputy director at the Federal Trade Commission and secretary of economic affairs under former Gov. Wiliam F. Weld. She also headed a business advisory group for former Gov. Deval Patrick.

Patrick, who delivered the commencement address, said he was there to take part in Larson’s send-off.

“I wanted to be here this morning in part to say a personal farewell to your outgoing president and my friend, Gloria Larson, G Larz,” Patrick said.

“Gloria, I was here at your inauguration and I am proud to be here to bid you a fond and deeply grateful farewell,” Patrick said. “Thank you for your service and your friendship.”

The Bentley board of trustees has appointed a committee to find Larson’s successor. She will officially step down at the end of June.
