Amesbury girls run wild

- By KAT HASENAUER CORNETTA

IPSWICH — The Amesbury girls track and field team was denied the Division 4 title a year ago by just one point to North Reading.

This year, with the powerhouse Hornets now in Division 3, the Indians were ready to step atop of the medal stand.

Amesbury did just that, taking its first divisional outdoor title by a landslide with 93 points, 26 more than runner-up Weston. And its success wasn’t limited to just the girls team. The Indians boys finished second to champion Weston by a mere two points, 62-60, at the meet held at Ipswich High School.

“It is a tremendous accomplishment on each team’s part,” said Amesbury coach Ernie Bissaillon. “It doesn’t get much better than this.”

Amesbury had solid performances in many of the girls events, especially the 4x100 relay, where it finished first in a blistering 49.65 seconds.

Sophomore Bharathi Subbiah was a giant part of the Weston girls’ success. She won the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 3.25 inches, and finished second in the long jump at a 17-10.25.

The fight for the boys title came down to the final event: the 4x400 relay. If Amesbury, in the second-to-last heat, could finish first, it would win the title. But Weston was one of the heavy favorites coming into the event. The Amesbury foursome gave it a strong effort, surging to a 3:33.22 finish, and waited to see if the time held up. On the last heat, Weston blew past the competition, taking the event and the title thanks to a 3:30.98 performance.

Sophomore Peter Diebold’s meet-record performance of :49.31 in the 400 was another high point for Weston.

“Our big events were the 400 and those last two relays,” said Weston coach John Monz. “That was 30 of our points right there.”

Jack Clohisy provided one of the meet’s best individual performances. The Pentucket junior won both the boys 110 and 400 hurdles.

Cameron Garabian of Seekonk led the field events for the girls, winning both the discus (130-04) and shot put (3803.5) titles with record throws.
