Stunned neighbors reported an overpowering stench as they watched investigators remove body bags from the Springfield property of a kidnapping suspect where authorities say they have found three bodies.

Springfield police said they found the bodies “in and around” the home of Stewart Rudolph Weldon, 40, who was arrested after a police chase Sunday on charges of kidnapping and beating a woman who told cops she had been held against her will and raped for a month.

Investigators began searching the house Wednesday based on statements Weldon made while in custody, authorities said.

“The smell last night when they opened the garage . ... It was bad,” said neighbor Stefan Davis. He noticed the odor about 1:30 a.m. yesterday.

Davis and neighbors George Quinones and Scott Griffin said they saw three body bags leave the property, one from inside the house, one from the garage and one from the yard.

“It’s terrible. One of the officers said to me, ‘You know what, this is something from the movies,’ ” Davis said. “I have young kids and it’s not even 100 yards away. It’s scary. You see it on TV but when it touches home, it makes it so real.”

Weldon was ordered held on $1 million bail on charges that include kidnapping, threatening to commit murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, said James Leydon, a spokesman for Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.

Weldon appeared to be laughing to himself as he sat
