Pimentel powers LA to City softball crown

- By BRENDAN CONNELLY

Shantary Pimentel was furious when she missed her chance on a fastball right down the middle.

But when East Boston’s Kayla Elliott thought she could fool the Latin Academy slugger again, Pimentel was ready.

Pimentel connected on the next pitch, launching a moonshot for a two-run inside-the-park home run as LA clinched its 13th straight Boston City League softball title with a 7-2 victory over the Jets at Wentworth.

“I saw the same pitch again. Was right at my letter,” said Pimental, who was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after her three-RBI performance.

The Dragons broke on top from the get-go. Jessica Rynne cranked a tworun inside-the-park homer, which landed steps from the Museum of Fine Arts, to put LA quickly up 2-0. The Dragons batted around, tagging on two more runs for a 4-0 advantage.

Michaela Barcelou went the distance for the Dragons (11-10), allowing just a pair of runs while striking out 10.

East Boston (13-6) was led by Theresa Forbes, who laced a two-run single.

By this point, Latin Academy skipper Rocco Zizza has lost track of the number of City League trophies he has compiled over the years. But despite fielding a very young roster, and having to overcome the loss of star pitcher Olivia McGrath, he has led the Dragons right back to the pinnacle as they gear up for the upcoming state tournament.

“It’s kind of like my golf game. I’ve lost count,” Zizza said. “I’m not sure . . . . Again, the most important thing is that we are playing better and better.”
