McLean steps down as MC hockey coach

Malden Catholic announced yesterday that hockey coach John McLean resigned after seven seasons.

McLean compiled a record of 118-31-18 with the Lancers, which included four Super Eight championships as well as four Catholic Conference titles.

“We are grateful for the thirteen years of service and dedication John showed to the hockey program at Malden Catholic,” headmaster Thomas J. Doherty III said in a release. “We look forward to building on his legacy and continuing our tradition of hockey excellence here (Malden Catholic).”

Added McLean: “These past years have been very special, and I am proud to have coached so many wonderful young men. I offer special thanks to (AD) Pat Driscoll and (assistant coach) Phil Antonelli for all they have done over the years. They created a family atmosphere each and every season that made going to the rink so special.”

Summing up McLean’s legacy at Malden Catholic, Driscoll said: “I’ve had the privilege to work with John as both an athletic director and a coach, watching him prepare every day for practices and games. John always gave 100 percent to Malden Catholic and his players; he always has and always will be about doing what is in the best interests of his players. I can’t thank John enough for everything he’s done for the young men he has coached, for me, and for our Malden Catholic community.”

Malden Catholic went 8-9-3 in 2017-18, missing the postseason for the first time in 13 seasons.

Driscoll will organize a search committee to consider McLean’s replacement.
