Young Herren takes hoop talents to BC

Chris Herren Jr. is following in the footsteps of his family on the basketball court.

The son of the former Celtics guard who played collegiate­ly at Boston College then Fresno State commited yesterday to the BC men’s basketball team, according to the school.

Originally a 2019 recruit, he reclassifi­ed to 2018, and will begin summer classes this week at the school. He’ll be a freshman on the basketball team for the 2018-19 season.

A 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard, Herren played the last two seasons at Tabor Academy. In 2017-18, he averaged 23 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game, and was a 42 percent shooter on 3-pointers.

“We are excited to add Chris to our program. He is a dynamic scorer who possesses a high basketball IQ. His ability to shoot from long range and his playmaking ability will fit our playing style well,” BC coach Jim Christian said in a statement.

Herren’s father, Chris Herren Sr., and uncle Mike Herren both were players at BC. Chris Sr. played briefly in the NBA for the Nuggets and Celtics . . . .

A former defensive end for the Bucs, Oilers and Cardinals and most notable with Alabama has been arrested on drug charges in Florida. Pinellas County Jail records show 50-year-old Keith McCants was arrested early yesterday near St. Petersburg, Fla. He’s charged with a felony count of possession of crack cocaine and driving with a revoked or suspended license . ...

The Falcons signed a one-year deal with safety Ron Parker, who spent the last five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Game 1 of the College World Series finals between Arkansas and Oregon State was postponed until tonight because of severe weather in Omaha, Neb . . . .

The U.S. men’s soccer team has finalized exhibition­s against Brazil, England and Italy, though it remains uncertain when the Americans’ new coach will be in place. The U.S. will play Brazil on Sept. 7 at East Rutherford, N.J. The Americans will play England at London’s Wembley Stadium on Nov.15 and face Italy five days later at a site to be determined . . . .

Paul Lawrie, who won the 1999 British Open at Carnoustie following a dramatic collapse by Jean Van de Velde, will miss next month’s edition at the same venue because of injury . . . .
