Superior Court Justice Charles Barrett of Canton

Charles F. Barrett of Canton, formerly of Milton, died Wednesday.

He was born in Cambridge. He graduated from St. John’s High School.

He was a 1952 graduate of Boston College and a 1955 graduate of Boston College Law School.

Mr. Barrett was an active member of the Class of ’55 and Class of ’52 alumni groups.

He served as case review editor and class president of BC Law from 1953 to 1954.

He practiced litigation and product liability law with the firm Nutter, McClennen & Fish from 1959-1989 and was appointed associate justice to the Massachuse­tts Superior Court by Michael Dukakis in 1989 and served in that role until 2000.

Mr. Barrett was a proud member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the Catholic Lawyers Guild, served on multiple committees for the Mass. Bar Associatio­n and was a trustee of the Social Law Library.

He was chairman of the Board of Appeals in Milton between the ’70s and ’80s, served as a Town Meeting member and was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Church, where he taught the Christian formation classes.

Mr. Barrett was an educator for Mass. Continuing Legal Education and lecturer for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy program.

He loved photograph­y, working on home improvemen­ts, gardening, family barbecues, traveling, reading, spending time with his grandchild­ren and greatgrand­children and volunteeri­ng at local homeless shelters.

Husband of the late Marie P. (O’Malley), he is survived by four sons, William C. of Norwood, John R. of Westminste­r, Richard J. of Canton and James P. of Arlington; two daughters, Kathleen M. Barrett-Lewis of Milton and Janice Vanty Barrett of Virginia Beach; 13 grandchild­ren; three great-grandchild­ren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth Church, Milton.

Interment will be in Milton Cemetery.
