Warriors give Kerr extension

-

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr received a contract extension following the franchise’s repeat championship and third title in four years during his tenure.

Kerr and general manager Bob Myers, who are close friends and colleagues, said when the season ended that something would get done quickly once they began formal discussions. Kerr had one year remaining on his original $25 million, five-year contract. Details of the extension were not announced yesterday.

The 52-year-old Kerr said he hopes to coach at least another decade and perhaps 15 years. His Warriors swept LeBron James and Cleveland in their fourth straight NBA Finals matchup.

Kerr stayed healthy and on the bench while dealing with symptoms such as headaches and dizzy spells stemming from a pair of back surgeries following the 2015 title.

Leonard eyes USA camp

Team USA will hold its minicamp in Las Vegas next week with 35 players listed as invitees, including Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard, who reportedly demanded a trade from the team and remains the topic of much offseason chatter.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich will head up the minicamp at UNLV and, according to ESPN and USA Today reports, Leonard may show up there, too. However, Leonard’s decision to go may be more to show the status of his recovery from injury than anything to do with mending fences with the Spurs.

Bjelica backs out on Sixers

Nemanja Bjelica’s tenure with the 76ers ended before it even started. The 6-foot-10 Serbian forward informed the team that he wants to remain in Europe this coming season. Bjelica played for the Timberwolves the past three seasons and reached an agreement July 5 with the Sixers on a one-year, midlevel exception for $4.45 million . . . .

The Memphis Grizzlies acquired guard Garrett Temple from the Sacramento Kings for guard Ben McLemore, center Deyonta Davis, a future second-round pick and cash considerations . . . .

The New Orleans Pelicans signed Trevon Bluiett to a two-way contract.
