Yanks have it made in shade with Gray

-

Sonny Gray won consecutive starts for the first time since the Yankees acquired him last summer, holding down a depleted Mets lineup again missing Yoenis Cespedes in a 7-6 Subway Series victory yesterday in New York’s Yankee Stadium.

Aaron Judge homered for the Yankees, who survived a wild ninth-inning in which closer Aroldis Chapman forced in two runs and failed to get an out. Chasen Shreve relieved with the bases loaded and a tworun lead, induced Devin Mesoraco’s runscoring, double-play grounder and retired Wilmer Flores on a slow roller in front of the mound for his second big league save, his first since August 2016.

The Yankees trailed after Michael Conforto’s second-inning home run but rallied against Steven Matz with a four-run fourth that included Didi Gregorius’ tying triple, run-scoring doubles by Miguel Andujar and Greg Bird, and Austin Romine’s RBI single. Mets center fielder Matt den Dekker had trouble with three balls that went for hits that inning and struck out three times, leaving him hitless in 17 at-bats this season.

A day after saying he may need surgery on both heels that would require an 8-10 month recovery, Cespedes was out again and the Mets’ front office did not publicly comment on his startling health revelation.

Marlins 3, Rays 2 — Rookie Pablo Lopez gave up three hits in six innings, Cameron Maybin homered and Miami edged Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Lopez (2-1) struck out six in his fourth major league start, helping the Marlins match their longest winning streak of the season at four games.

American League

Blue Jays 4, Orioles 1 — Marcus Stroman pitched seven sharp innings, Aledmys Diaz had two hits and host Toronto won its sixth straight game against struggling Baltimore.

O’s righty Alex Cobb picked up his major league-worst 13th loss as Baltimore dropped to 1-8 against Toronto this season. Cobb (2-13) lost his sixth straight decision.

Stroman (3-7) allowed one run and five hits. He threw a season-high 107 pitches, the first time this season he has topped 100.

Royals 4, Twins 2 — Salvador Perez homered, reliever Brian Flynn picked up the win with three scoreless innings and Kansas City beat visiting Minnesota.

The Royals won back-to-back games for the first time since May 29-30.

Perez belted his 14th homer with Mike Moustakas aboard in the first. Perez hit a 2-2 pitch from Lance Lynn out to right, only his third opposite-field homer this season.

Astros 7, Angels 0 — George Springer hit a grand slam while Houston batted around in the sixth inning, and Justin Verlander ended his six-start winless streak with 11 strikeouts over six dominant innings in a shutout victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.

National League

Cardinals, Cubs split — Tyler Chatwood pitched into the sixth inning and made a key defensive play in his first win in two months, helping Chicago beat visiting St.Louis, 7-2, in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. The Cardinals won the late game, 6-3.

Chatwood (4-5) issued six walks and hit a batter, continuing a season-long problem with control issues. But the right-hander allowed just one hit in 51⁄3 innings — Matt Carpenter’s fourth homer in the last two days.

Brewers 4, Dodgers 2 — Christian Yelich hit a tying homer off Clayton Kershaw in a three-run sixth inning, and host Milwaukee snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over Los Angeles.

Pirates 6, Reds 2 — Corey Dickerson hit two first-pitch home runs, rookie Nick Kingham overcame another rain delay to pitch six shutout innings and drive in two runs as Pittsburgh beat host Cincinnati for its season-high eighth straight win.

Padres-Phillies, ppd. — The game between San Diego and host Philadelphia was postponed because of the threat of all-day rain, forcing the teams to play a day-night doubleheader today.

Braves-Nationals, ppd. — The game between Atlanta and host Washington was postponed because of the threat of all-day rain. The makeup date was not announced.
