Deval can win with hope and personality

Patrick, not Warren, is Bay State’s best choice to outduel Trump in 2020

Deval Patrick should run for president in 2020.

He was not the GOAT governor, nor does he have a perfect track record on policies and legislation, but he sure can campaign and possibly win. He won’t become the 46th president on political points, but personality.

Patrick could take on President Trump because he is one of the best campaigners, who can deliver a speech filled with hope and inspiration unlike any other politician in the past several decades. Few can forget his impassioned 2012 DNC speech. This country is fractured from the last election and the country could benefit from a man who can talk to the American people with his natural gift that can’t be taught and bring people together. His speeches are so good former President Barack Obama even famously “borrowed” one.

As much as a lot of women would love to see a female in the Oval Office, no obvious choice has surfaced. Democrats would make a grave mistake to get behind U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren. The toxic 2020 campaign between Warren and Trump would only make this nation even more divided. The way it stands now, she is going to win her re-election campaign and then turn around and seek another job, costing Bay Staters millions of dollars for a special election. At least Patrick finished out his two terms and went to the private sector for a few years to recharge the batteries, getting out of the political swamp.

Patrick dealt with plenty of scandals while in office, including the famous fancy drapes in his office, swapping out his state car for a Cadillac, mismanaging the Department of Children and Families and giving away more than $40 million in tax credits to Evergreen Solar, which quickly turned around and shut the factory down, costing 800 jobs in Massachusetts. His rollout of Obamacare was a disaster, but that can be said for most states. He got a casino bill passed that could create a lot of jobs and revenue for the state. Our economy bounced back faster than the rest of the country after the 2008 crisis, and we always bucked the national trend on jobs during his tenure.

Meanwhile, Warren has been more concerned about her own brand than her constituents. She spends more time touring the country and fighting Trump than actually meeting with the people who put her in the Senate.

Warren has a huge campaign war chest, but much of that will be drained by November. Plus, as we saw in the last election, money does not define a candidate. Patrick famously ran a grassroots campaign all the way to Beacon Hill’s Corner Office and knocked out some well-funded opponents.

Deval can win on personality and a promise to make America civil again.
