KC clubs Yanks ace

Luis Severino was an AllStar for the Yankees two weeks ago, but that now seems like a long time ago.

Severino got hit hard in another shaky start and the Kansas City Royals, hours after trading cornerstone Mike Moustakas, beat New York, 10-5, yesterday in the opener of a day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.

In the nightcap, Greg Bird hit a game-tying homer in the eighth, and Aaron Hicks soon added a sacrifice fly to score to go-ahead run as the Yankees rallied for a 5-4 win to split the twin-bill.

In the opner, trying for his major league-leading 15th win, Severino instead was pulled after Lucas Duda’s two-run homer made it 6-0 in the fifth inning. Rosell Hererra hit an early two-run double, and Salvador Perez had a two-run single that set up Duda.

Severino (14-4) allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out five in his shortest start of the year. He has been tagged for six earned runs in each of his last two starts — he hadn’t allowed more than five in 28 previous starts.

Aided by three double plays, 2rookie Brad Keller went 5 ⁄3 innings for the win one day after his 23rd birthday. He gave up four runs on nine hits, a day after his start was pushed back because of a rainout.

Orioles 11, Rays 2 — Trey Mancini and Joey Rickard combined for seven hits, including back-to-back home runs in the second inning, and host Baltimore breezed past Tampa Bay.

Kevin Kiermaier had a pair of hits, including a home run, for the Rays. Lefty Jalen Beeks, acquired Wednesday from the Red Sox for Nathan Eovaldi, allowed eight runs and 10 hits over 31⁄3 relief innings in his Rays debut.

Rangers 7, Astros 3 — Rougned Odor hit two home runs, including one insidethe-park, and went 5-for-5 as visiting Texas beat Justin Verlander and Houston.

Ariel Jurado, who was called up from Double-A Frisco, set down 12 of the first 13 batters he faced and allowed one run on two hits, fanning two and walking one in six innings for his first major league win.

After the game, the Astros placed All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve on the 10day disabled list with right knee soreness.

White Sox 9, Blue Jays 5 — Pinch-hitter Daniel Palka gave host Chicago the lead with a two-run single and Leury Garcia added a threerun triple in a six-run eighth to post a comeback victory against Toronto.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had two hits to extend his multihit streak to a Toronto-record 10 games.

Tigers 2, Indians 1 — JaCoby Jones hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the third inning and host Detroit held on to beat Cleveland.

National League

Cardinals 6, Cubs 2 — Marcell Ozuna hit a grand slam during a six-run first, Miles Mikolas pitched six strong innings and St. Louis beat visiting Chicago to improve to 9-6 this season against the NL Central leaders.

Reds 6, Phillies 2 — Joey Votto drove in two and four players each knocked in one as host Cincinnati, last in the NL Central, beat East Division-leading Philadelphia for the second straight night.

Dodgers 5, Braves 1 — Yasiel Puig homered and drove in three runs following his return from the disabled list, Alex Wood pitched 52⁄3 scoreless innings to win his sixth straight decision and visiting Los Angeles beat struggling Atlanta.

Marlins 2, Nationals 1 — J.T. Realmuto singled with the bases loaded and none out in the 10th inning as Miami snapped a streak of eight consecutive home losses to Washington.

Pirates 5, Mets 0 — Trevor Williams outdueled Jacob deGrom, tossing six innings of five-hit, no-run ball, to lead host Pittsburgh past New York for its 13th win in the past 15.
