Two prominent Boston lawyers are joining the local office of Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr to grow its Hub roots and establish the firm’s national First Amendment and media practice after decades as top litigators at Mintz Levin.

Attorneys Jeff Robbins and Joseph Lipchitz, with 50 years of experience between them, bring their fierce defense of free speech and vig- orous work as trial lawyers to their new post. They’ll also be assisting with higher education and health care practices.

“It was difficult to decide to leave Mintz Levin, a great firm headed by a genuinely magnificent person and lawyer in Bob Popeo, which has been my home for 36 years,” Robbins said. “In the end, the energized esprit de corps of Saul Ewing, the impressive job they have done integrating 17 offices around the country and the exciting things they are doing in their Boston office added up to a wonderful opportunity, one I didn’t want to pass up.”

Robbins is a former assistant U.S. attorney in Boston and past counsel to congressional committees.

Lipchitz was a military prosecutor in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Both lawyers, who represent the Boston Herald, have been named as top attorneys in their field.

“The opportunity to help grow and expand my practice at such a collaborative and forward-thinking firm as Saul Ewing is invigorating. The depth and reach of Saul Ewing is perfectly aligned with my practice,” said Lipchitz.

Barry F. Levin, managing partner at Saul Ewing, called the two among the best in the business. “From the day we opened our Boston office six years ago, we have made it a priority to attract highly skilled and talented lawyers at the top of their game. Jeff and Joe are best in class and certainly meet this standard,” said Levin. “Their addition, along with Steve Eichel who joined us in Boston last month, further expands the wide range of legal services we can offer to our clients in the area and beyond. They make our Boston office and law firm even better.”

Saul Ewing jumped into the Boston market after merging with law firm Dionne & Gass LLP in 2011. The firm’s local office focuses on real estate, finance and business law and litigation.

Robbins is a 1978 graduate of Brown University, and a 1982 graduate of the Boston University School of Law.
