Locals among U.S. Hockey HOF class

Two Massachuse­tts natives are among this year’s class of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

Dorchester’s Paul Stewart, a retired NHL referee, and Melrose’s Leland “Hago” Harrington, who played for the Bruins and coached the EHL’s Boston Olympics, will be inducted on Dec. 12 at a ceremony in Nashville, Tenn.

Stewart officiated 1,059 NHL regularsea­son and playoff games. He’s the only American to play and referee in the NHL.

Harrington was the first Americande­veloped player to record a hat trick. He died in 1959.

Nashville Predators general manager — and Northeaste­rn alumnus — David Poile, former University of Michigan coach Red Berenson and star forward Natalie Darwitz will also be inducted.

Poile has run an NHL team the past 36 seasons, including 15 with the Washington Capitals and 21 with the Predators. He has the most victories of any GM in league history.

Poile and Berenson were each born in Canada and went on to make significan­t impacts on hockey in the United States. …

The Arizona Coyotes signed center Christian Dvorak to a six-year contract extension averaging $4.45 million per year. The deal will keep Dvorak in Arizona through 2024-25.

The 22-year-old Dvorak was Arizona’s third-leading goal scorer with 15 last season and fifth in points with 37. He has 30 goals and 40 assists in 156 career games with the Coyotes.

Warriors’ Curry shoots 71

Stephen Curry rallied with three birdies to shoot a 1-over 71 in the first round of the Web.com Tour’s Ellie Mae Classic in Hayward, Calif.

Making his second appearance in the $600,000 event at TPC Stonebrae, the Golden State Warriors star was 8 shots behind leaders Adam Long, Seth Reeves and Samuel Del Val. Last year, Curry shot 74-74 to tie for 148th and miss the cut by 11 shots. …

Just days after saying he felt energized heading into this season, the school announced it had signed Snyder to a new five-year contract that includes a pay bump to $3.45 million this season and could keep the 78-year-old coach with the Wildcats through the 2022 season. …

Tylor Taylor, apparently after learning he’d been arrested about two months ago in connection with a firearms theft from a pawn shop in Georgia. …

Kenny Stills and two other Miami Dolphins protested during the national anthem before last night’s 26-24 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Receivers Stills and Albert Wilson kneeled behind teammates lined up standing along the sideline. Defensive end Robert Quinn stood and raised his right fist, as he did during the anthem last season with the Los Angeles Rams.

There were no apparent demonstrat­ions by the Buccaneers. …

The Minnesota Vikings lost a key member of their offensive line when left guard Nick Easton was placed on injured reserve due to a bulging disc in his neck.

Djokovic upset in Toronto

Greek teen Stefanos Tsitsipas upset Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The 19-year-old Tsitsipas broke the ninth-seeded Serb’s serve early in the third set and held serve from there to reach his first career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarterfin­al.

Djokovic, a four-time Rogers Cup champion, faded late on a warm, breezy afternoon at Aviva Centre. …

U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens advanced to the Rogers Cup quarterfin­als, beating Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 7-5 in the hard-court event in Montreal.

Stephens looked to be cruising with a 5-1 lead in the second set, but Suarez rallied to tie it at 5. Stephens broke serve for 6-5 and scored four straight points to put away the match, ending it with a sharp cross-court forehand.

“Maybe the old me would have kind of freaked out,” Stephens said. “I was kind of like, ‘OK, it’s fine, she’s allowed to play well. Just kind of regroup.’ I did that. I was happy with that.”
