Padres thump Arrieta, Phils

Freddy Galvis hit a grand slam, Travis Jankowski stole four bases and scored three times, and the Padres beat the Philadelph­ia Phillies, 9-3, yesterday in San Diego.

Galvis connected against Jake Arrieta in the third inning, hitting a two-out drive to center for his first career slam. It was his third homer in his last seven games and No.8 on the season.

Last-place San Diego won for the fifth time in seven games, including two-of-three against contending Philadelph­ia, which returns home for a two-game interleagu­e series with the firstplace Red Sox tomorrow.

Cubs 4, Nationals 3 — Rookie David Bote hit a two-out, two-strike, pinchhit walk-off grand slam to give host Chicago a stunning win over Washington.

It was a old fashioned pitchers’ duel before the ninth, as Nats ace Max Scherzer tossed seven innings of shutout ball, fanning 10, while the Cubs’ Cole Hamels only allowed one hit in seven innings, fanning nine, but left trailing 1-0. The Nats tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth.

But in the bottom half, reliever Ryan Madson gave up an infield single to Jason Heyward with one out and hit Albert Almora. After an out, he hit Wilson Contreras to load the bases, and Bote drove a 2-2 pitch well beyond the center-field wall.

Diamondbac­ks 9, Reds 2 — Paul Goldschmid­t hit two of Arizona’s five homers to help avoid a sweep by pounding host Cincinnati. Daniel Descalso, Eduardo Escobar and David Peralta also connected for Arizona.

Mets 4, Marlins 3 — Jose Reyes hit a two-run homer, Noah Syndergaar­d struck out seven in seven innings and visiting New York nipped Miami.

Braves 8, Brewers 7 — Ozzie Albies led off the seventh inning with a tiebreakin­g homer, one of three hit by Atlanta, which overcame 19 hits by visiting Milwaukee.

Rockies, 4, Dodgers 3 — Chris Iannetta drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk in the ninth inning, and Colorado beat Los Angeles after squanderin­g a late lead in Denver.

Giants 4, Pirates 3 — Dereck Rodriguez pitched seven innings of two-hit ball to continue his sparkling rookie season and host San Francisco edged Pittsburgh.

American League

Yankees 7, Rangers 2 — CC Sabathia threw six shutout innings of one-hit ball, Giancarlo Stanton homered for the fifth time in six games and host New York defeated Texas.

Didi Gregorius also homered and turned in a nifty defensive play for the Yankees, which won for the sixth time in seven games.

Athletics 8, Angels 7 — Jed Lowrie homered and moved over 1,000 hits for his career, and Oakland held on for a victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif. It was the Athletics’ ninth win in 11 games.

Mariners 4, Astros 3 — Ryon Healy hit a tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning, Mitch Haniger delivered an RBI double in the 10th and Seattle beat host Houston to sweep a four-game series from the AL West leader.

Indians 9, White Sox 7 — Carlos Carrasco struck out nine in seven innings, and visiting Cleveland held off Chicago.

Blue Jays 2, Rays 1 — Kevin Pillar scored the tiebreakin­g run on an infield grounder in the sixth inning, and host Toronto beat Tampa Bay to avoid a three-game sweep.

Tigers 4, Twins 2 — Matthew Boyd pitched six strong innings and Detroit beat visiting Minnesota on Jack Morris Day at Comerica Park.

Interleagu­e

Cardinals 8, Royals 2 — Yadier Molina broke a tie with a two-run single in the seventh, and Tyson Ross won his debut with St.Louis by beating host Kansas City.
