LATEST SHINY OBJECT? OMAROSA

Non-story drowning out Dems’ message

- — jaclyn.cashman@bostonherald.com

The only people who care about fired White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman are in the media.

Average voters are not sucked into the salacious storyline. Yet, once again the Fourth Estate has fallen for a sensational yet meaningless news nugget that simply distracts the Democrats from getting their message out to the public right before the allimportant midterm elections.

Think Stormy Daniels. Another so-called scandal voters couldn’t care less about. When the American hostages were released by North Korea, CNN paid lip service to this historic breaking news and then went to a scheduled interview with Stormy Daniels’ attorney. Once that conversation was done they returned to the coverage of the hostages, but it showed such a lack in news judgment to take the attorney when Americans who were feared dead were coming home safely.

After nearly two years of covering President Trump, the media still is so unaware that it falls for these circus acts every time. Meanwhile, the economy is booming, taxes are lower for businesses and regulations are down.

Omarosa was once known as a leading villain on reality TV and is playing the same character in Washington. Trump now calls her a “lowlife.”

Trump sees the distraction that the media has created and he is playing right along by tweeting, “...really bad things. Nasty to people & would constantly miss meetings & work. When Gen. Kelly came on board he told me she was a loser & nothing but problems. I told him to try working it out, if possible, because she only said GREAT things about me - until she got fired!”

Out plugging her book yesterday, Omarosa told a TV host, “I think it’s sad that with all of the things that’s going on in the country that he would take time out to insult me and to insult my intelligence.”

And it is sad that Trump punches down. But now it is clear he does this because he is able to control the news cycle and keep it away from topics Democrats want to discuss like families getting ripped apart at the Mexican border because of Trump’s harsh immigration policy.

Democrats will have little luck creating a sea change in Washington come November, because their biggest advocate, the media, chases the latest shiny object and not the core messaging.
