DeGrom, Mets handle Yanks

-

Jacob deGrom struck out 12 and the New York Mets backed him in a big way, hitting five home runs while battering Luis Severino and the Yankees, 8-5, last night at Yankee Stadium.

Amed Rosario led off this Subway Series matchup with a drive into the right-field seats and Jose Bautista, Todd Frazier, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto later connected.

DeGrom (7-7), a victim of poor run support most of the season, threw 62⁄3 innings and left with a major league-best 1.81 ERA. He allowed two earned runs and exited with a 7-3 lead.

DeGrom fanned Austin Romine with his 113th and final pitch, and posted his first win in three career starts in the Bronx, improving to 2-4 overall against the Yankees.

Severino (15-6) was gone a lot earlier. He stayed stuck in a rut that began before he pitched in the All-Star Game. Severino was tagged for seven hits, including homers by Rosario and Bautista, and four runs in four innings.

Miguel Andujar hit a two-run homer in the Yankees eighth.

Robert Gsellman worked the ninth for his seventh save.

The Yankees also put pitcher CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list because of right knee inflammation. On Sunday, Sabathia pitched six shutout innings of one-hit ball against Texas. The 38-year-old left-hander is 7-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 22 starts.

Indians 10, Reds 3 — Jose Ramirez connected for his 35th homer and Yandy Diaz hit a tiebreaking RBI double in a seven-run sixth inning, helping Cleveland pull away from host Cincinnati.

Ramirez, Michael Brantley and Yan Gomes had three hits apiece in the Indians’ fifth win in six games.

Also, Cleveland outfielder Leonys Martin is recovering from a bacterial infection that team president Chris Antonetti described as “life-threatening.” Martin is in stable condition at the Cleveland Clinic. The team said Martin has made a lot of progress in the last 24 to 36 hours.

Rangers 5, Diamondbacks 3 — In Arlington, Texas, Bartolo Colon won his first start since setting the record for victories by a Latin American pitcher, going five innings to help Texas beat Arizona.

The Diamondbacks began the night a game ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the lead in the NL West.

Colon (7-10) retired 10 consecutive batters after allowing a run in the first. The 45-year-old allowed four hits and three runs.

Braves sweep Marlins — Ronald Acuna Jr. pulled off one of the rarest feats in baseball, hitting leadoff homers in both games of a doubleheader to lead host Atlanta to a sweep over Miami.

The 20-year-old rookie hit an opposite-field drive into the Braves’ bullpen in Game 1, powering Atlanta to a 9-1 victory. Haitian-American Touki Toussaint pitched six innings to record the win in his major league debut.

It was more of the same from Acuna in the nightcap. He sent a towering shot into the seats in left-center , sparking the Braves to a 6-1 win behind another strong outing on the mound from Mike Foltynewicz (10-7).

Acuna appeared to be only the fourth player ever to hit a pair of leadoff homers in a doubleheader, joining Harry Hooper, Rickey Henderson and Brady Anderson.

The Braves stretched their lead in the NL East to a full game over idle Philadelphia.

American League

Royals 3, Blue Jays 1 — Ryan O’Hearn homered and drove in a career-high three runs, Brad Keller threw seven strong innings and host Kansas City beat Toronto to spoil Sean Reid-Foley’s major league debut.

Reid-Foley is only the second player in major league history to be born in Guam. He went five innings, allowing three runs, six hits, three walks and striking out three.

Also, the Royals placed lefthander Danny Duffy on the 10day disable list with a shoulder impingement.

Tigers 9, White Sox 5 — Nicholas Castellanos had a careerhigh five hits, including a goahead homer in the seventh inning, and drove in five runs as host Detroit beat Chicago for the ninth time in 10 games this season.

Elsewhere in baseball — The Milwaukee Brewers recalled outfielder Keon Broxton from Triple-A Colorado Springs and optioned relievers Jacob Barnes and Aaron Wilkerson to the minor-league affiliate.
