A motorcyclist is dead after a collision with a 29-year-old Whitman man police say was driving under the influence with a child in his car.
Police said the suspect, Anthony Hathaway, will appear today in Brockton District Court where he will be charged with a motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of drugs, endangering a child while operating under the influence of drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of drugs and a marked lanes violation.
Police said Hathaway violently struck the motorcycle rider head-on with a 7-year-old boy in the car.
Authorities said they responded to the area of Bedford Street in Bridgewater at 11:50 a.m. yesterday.
First responders found the motorcycle driver with serious, life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Toyota sedan remained on scene and was arrested after authorities determined he was under the influence of drugs.
A preliminary investigation shows the driver was traveling northbound on Route 18 when he allegedly crossed the center line into the southbound lane of traffic in order to pass the vehicle in front of him, authorities said.
Police said the suspect was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. The boy in the vehicle was placed in the care of his mother and was unharmed.
