Flooding, disease, farm problems caused by rains

If you have been bothered by the heavy rainfall this summer, you aren’t alone. According to the National Weather Service, rainfall averages for Boston this month are nearly double the average, creating issues with flooding, farming and West Nile virus.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health raised the statewide risk level for West Nile virus yesterday from low to moderate, which could be attributed to frequent heavy rainfall. Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel says hot, humid, wet weather provides the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to breed.

On average, Boston sees 2.26 inches of rainfall during the month of August. However, as of yesterday the amount is nearly double with a total rainfall of 4.15 inches. Year-to-date averages are also up, with a normal yearly rainfall of 27.53 inches and current rainfall at 31.94 inches.

Increased rainfall is also harming farmers across the state. With excessive rain comes rot and damage to crops. Laura Sapienza-Grabski, president of the Massachusetts Association of Agricultural Commissions, says a number of Massachusetts farmers are trying to replant their fields. “The farmers are just having to deal with a lot of mold, mildew and disease,” she said.

She also says it’s been difficult for farmers to sell produce. “Consumers come to a farm stand wanting to see a perfect vegetable. It’s hard for farmers to keep up the visual quality that consumers want.”

Sapienza-Grabski says that Massachusetts residents can help by buying local. Right now it’s peak season for peaches, apples, tomatoes, corn, squash and cucumbers. “Make sure you’re supporting the farmers in your community,” she said. “They are under tremendous stress.”

The National Weather Service is predicting normal precipitation and temperatures for September and says there are currently no drought warnings in Boston.
