No. 8 Miami suspends QB Perry for opener

-

Miami quarterback N'Kosi Perry will not be with the eighth-ranked Hurricanes for their opener against No. 25 LSU tonight because of a violation of team rules.

The Hurricanes announced the one-game suspension yesterday, a few hours before the team left for the game. Miami coach Mark Richt did not offer specifics, but said Perry “made some positive changes” since the decision was handed down.

Perry will be able to dress for Miami’s home opener against Savannah State on Sept. 8. He did not travel with the Hurricanes yesterday.

Cade Weldon will back up Miami starter Malik Rosier tonight. Perry is entering his redshirt freshman year and did not see any game action in 2017 . . . .

Florida suspended seven players for its season opener, including senior defensive end Cece Jefferson and dynamic receiver Kadarius Toney, for “not living up to the Gator standard.”

Jefferson and Toney highlight the list for much different reasons. Jefferson sat out yesterday’s opener against Charleston Southern because of academic issues. Toney was involved in a May 28 altercation on campus with a group of Gainesville locals. He was later pulled over and found with a loaded AR-15 in the backseat of his car.

The first incident involved several teammates, air soft guns and a frying pan. Defensive lineman Kyree

Campbell also was part of the dispute and was suspended for the opener.

Defensive tackle Luke Ancrum, cornerback Brian

Edwards, running back Adarius Lemons and walk-on offensive lineman James Washington also were not expected to play against the Buccaneers.

Durant vaults into Champions lead

Joe Durant eagled the par-5 18th for a 7-under 63 and a 1-stroke lead over Miguel Angel Jimenez at the PGA Tour Champions’ Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta.

Durant birdied the first four holes on the back nine and bogeyed the par-4 15th before pulling ahead with the closing eagle. The four-time PGA Tour champion had an 11-under 129 total.

Jimenez birdied the final two holes for a 66. Kirk

Triplett, tied for the first-round lead with Jimenez after a 64, had a 67 to drop 2 strokes back at 9-under . . . .

Georgia Hall pulled away from Minjee Lee late in the third round to take a 2-stroke lead in the Cambia Portland (Ore.) Classic.

The Women’s British Open winner four weeks ago for her first LPGA Tour title, Hall shot a 3-under 69. She birdied the par-3 16th and par-4 17th and made a 6-foot par save on the par-4 18th at Columbia Edgewater.

Lakers waive Deng

The Los Angeles Lakers waived forward Luol Deng, just over two years after signing him to a four-year, $72 million free agent contract. The Lakers didn’t disclose the details of a probable buyout with Deng . . . . Kimi Raikkonen edged teammate and title hopeful Sebastian Vettel in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza to clinch only his second pole position in 10 years.

Raikkonen clocked a 1:19.119 — at an average speed of 163.8 mph — to beat Juan Pablo Montoya’s 14-year track record.
