Dehydration reportedly wipes out Pressley day after election

Ayanna Pressley went to Carney Hospital in Dorchester to deal with dehydration yesterday, after weeks of campaigning in back-to-back heat waves, sources told the Herald.

Her staff wouldn’t confirm the hospitalization the day after her primary victory. But her campaign acknowledged Pressley was feeling unwell after she made an abrupt exit off stage at a Democratic Unity event in Dorchester. Her staff later canceled an afternoon event to thank campaign volunteers. Sources told the Herald she went to the hospital. It was unclear whether she remained there.

“After an intense few days on the trail and a unity event this morning, Councilor Pressley is dealing with some symptoms of dehydration and exhaustion,” campaign manager Sarah Groh said. “We will be cancelling the remainder of today’s schedule and will keep you updated about public events tomorrow.”

The report of her illness comes after a number of hot, humid days in the 90s. In June, Pressley tweeted about her scarce water consumption and said her family and campaign staff were pushing her to stay hydrated. She promised to try to drink more water.

“My fam + staff daily reprimand me for my little if any water intake. I keep telling folks, coffee & green tea count, they do have water IN them, but this wk I’m going to really try,” she tweeted June 11. Herald wire services contributed to this report.
