DIVISIONS 7-8 FOOTBALL

Mashpee will be looking for its fourth straight Super Bowl title this fall and has the star power to make a serious run at it.

Start in the offensive backfield where Devaun Ford averaged nearly 130 rushing yards a game last season. On the other side of the ball, defensive end Xavier Gonsaves amassed a school-record 18 sacks. Throw in multi-talented defensive back Cam Kergo and that’s a pretty good nucleus.

Nantucket will test Mashpee in the opening game and the Whalers have a pair of game-breaking backs in Devonte Usher and Torane Burton. Cohasset, Monomoy, Abington and Case figure to land in the upper half of Div. 7 South.

There will be a new look on the St. Mary’s sidelines as Sean Driscoll comes over from Winthrop to replace Matt Durgin, who stepped down following an impressive 11-win campaign. He will look to tight end/defensive end Patrick Henry, linebacker George Freeman, lineman D.J. DiCenso and wide receiver Lee Pacheco to help lead the way.

Greater Lawrence could well provide the stiffest challenge in Div. 7 North. Multi-dimensional quarterback Jose Caceres is back along with wide receiver Donnie Croteau, lineman Humberfy Contreras and linebacker Michelette Vargas. Lowell Catholic has enough talent to be in the mix.

Brian Kraby takes over at Millis and he will look to players like lineman Murrell Quashie to lead the way. St. John Paul could be the toughest challenge to Millis in Div. 8 South as it returns CCL Small Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Flynn as well as wide receiver Mike Satkevich and defensive back Will Coty.

West Bridgewater should be among the elite teams in Div. 8 South as it returns a host of players led by running back Christian Keeling. Coyle-Cassidy is another school on the rise in this section.

Lynn Tech turned its fortunes around last year, reaching the Div. 8 North final and winning a state vocational bowl title. The Tigers will lean heavily on quarterback/ defensive back David Barrios, a three-year starter and leader on and off the field.

Paul Sobolewski moves over from Cathedral, where he led them to the Div. 8 North title, to Pope John where he could very well have a team capable of making a run. Derrick Beasley takes over at Cathedral where there are holes to fill in the lineup.
