Roberts, Duxbury light up B-R

- By GREG DUDEK

There’s no need for an adjustment period this season for Duxbury senior quarterback John Roberts.

In his second season with the keys to the Dragons’ high-flying offense, Roberts showed how far he has come in last night’s season opener.

Roberts accounted for six total touchdowns, with three coming in the air and three on the ground, as Duxbury steamrolled Bridgewater-Raynham for a 40-14 nonleague win in Bridgewater.

“I’m a lot more comfortable,” said Roberts, who completed 8-of-12 passes for 187 yards and ran for an additional 101 yards. “I know the playbook a lot better. I know all my reads a lot more. It’s a lot easier to know which receiver is going to be open on any given play and what the defense is looking like.”

Duxbury (1-0) trailed for a mere 22 seconds after B-R (0-1) took the lead, 14-13, on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Morrison to Jeff Ciccio with 2:56 left in the second quarter.

On Duxbury’s next play from scrimmage, Roberts unleashed a frozen rope to Leo Allgaier for a 55-yard score to regain the lead.

That started a string of 27 unanswered points with Duxbury’s uptempo, no-huddle offense rolling. Roberts scored on a 12-yard TD run to take a 26-14 advantage less than two minutes into the third quarter.

Roberts continued to pick apart B-R’s defense later in the frame when he hit Will Prouty (five catches, 114 yards) for the duo’s second TD connection on a 40-yard pass to blow it open, 33-14.

“John learned so much last year,” said Duxbury coach Dave Maimaron. “Will Prouty is just a gifted athlete. He’s a special kid. Our O-line was great. They did an unbelievable job protecting John.”

After scoring on a 61yard scamper on Duxbury’s second offensive play of the game, Roberts capped his night with a Houdini-like 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

In other football action, Mange Camara scored rushing, receiving and kickoff return touchdowns and

Watertown opened its season with a 2718 victory against

Arlington Catholic.

The Raiders never trailed after Karim Monroe’s 63-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage. Camara added a 75-yard kickoff return touchdown, a 75-yard TD run and hauled in a 35-yard scoring strike from Nick McDermott.

In Cape Ann League action, Anna Coyle had two goals and an assist as Manchester Essex (1-0) blanked Hamilton-Wenham, 4-0.
