Seattle hustles to halt Yankees
Mitch Haniger dashed home to score the goahead run on a grounder in the eighth inning, then made a diving catch for the final out yesterday that gave the Mariners a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees in Seattle.
The Yankees’ lead atop the AL wild card race was cut to 21⁄2 games over Oakland.
Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his major leagueleading 54th save, helped by Haniger’s play. With a runner on first and two outs, Giancarlo Stanton broke his bat on a shallow fly ball to right. Haniger rushed in, made a dive and caught it, giving Alex Colome the win.
Athletics 7, Rangers 3 — Stephen Piscotty homered and Oakland rallied from an early three-run deficit to beat visiting Texas.
Matt Olson had two hits for the A’s, who have won six of seven.
Blue Jays 6, Indians 2 — Toronto right fielder Randal Grichuk was injured in a bizarre collision with a security guard’s chair, and replacement Teoscar Hernandez hit a three-run homer to power the hosts over Cleveland.
Grichuk was being checked for a possible concussion after slamming face-first into the guard’s chair while chasing Brandon Guyer’s foul fly in the fourth inning.
Justin Smoak hit his team-leading 24th homer in the first for the hosts, while Francisco Lindor blasted his 34th for the Indians.
Rays 8, Orioles 3 — In St. Petersburg, Fla., Brandon Lowe hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning and Tampa Bay beat Baltimore to tie a team record with its 11th consecutive home win.
Angels 1, White Sox 0 — Andrew Heaney tossed three-hit ball over seven innings and struck out a career-high 12, and Kole Calhoun had a RBI single in the seventh to lift Los Angeles to a three-game sweep in Chicago.
Twins 3, Royals 1 — In Minneapolis, Willians Astudillo hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Minnesota the win over Kansas City.
National League
Braves 9, Diamondbacks 5 — In Phoenix, Ender Inciarte hit a three-run homer during a six-run rally in the ninth and Atlanta beat skidding Arizona to increase their NL East lead to 41⁄2 games.
The Diamondbacks, who have lost seven of nine, stayed 21⁄2 games behind NL West-leading Colorado.
Dodgers 9, Rockies 6 — Justin Turner hit a two-run homer as part of a fourhit day and Los Angeles climbed closer to firstplace Colorado in the NL West with a win in Denver.
Mets 6, Phillies 4 — Michael Conforto hit a threerun homer in a four-run fifth inning and tied a career best with four RBI, as host New York beat sliding Philadelphia despite scratching Cy Young candidate Jacob deGrom due to the rainy weather.
Brewers 6, Giants 3 — Jonathan Schoop hit a grand slam after Ryan Braun was hit by a pitch in a tense sixth inning, and host Milwaukee beat San Francisco to complete a series sweep and preserve its lead in the NL wild card race.
Cubs-Nationals, ppd. — Chicago at Washington was postponed because of rain and rescheduled for Thursday at 4:05 p.m.
Marlins-Pirates, ppd. — Miami at Pittsburgh was cancelled more than four hours before its 1:35 p.m. start, and was rescheduled for Oct.1.

Cardinals 5, Tigers 2 — John Gant pitched effectively into the seventh, when the St. Louis’ bats finally erupted for five runs to dispatch host Detroit and avoid a series sweep.
