WR Matthews back in Philly

-

The Philadelphia Eagles turned to a familiar face to bolster their depleted receivers corps.

The Eagles signed wide receiver Jordan Matthews yesterday, reuniting him with close friend Carson Wentz in time for the quarterback’s return from injury. Matthews played his first three seasons with the Eagles before he was traded to Buffalo in August 2017. He signed with the Patriots in April but was released during training camp after he injured his hamstring.

“We’re excited to get him back,” coach Doug Pederson said. “He knows our offense. I think it’s huge.”

Mike Wallace was placed on injured reserve after suffering a broken fibula in a 27-21 loss at Tampa Bay.

Texans respond

The Houston Texans fired back at an East Texas school superintendent who wrote: “You can’t count on a black quarterback,” in the comment section of an online news article where he was criticizing quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Lynn Redden referred to the last play of Sunday’s game, in which Watson let the clock run down before completing a pass to DeAndre Hopkins in a loss to Tennessee.

Redden’s full post read: “When you need precision decision-making you can’t count on a black quarterback.” It was quickly deleted, but not before another reader took a screenshot of it and sent it to the newspaper.

Coach Bill O’Brien was asked what he thought about the post.

“I really don’t want to waste a lot of time responding to outdated, inaccurate, ignorant, idiotic statements,” he said. “I’ll just let (Watson’s) proven success on the field, his character off the field, speak for itself.”

Watson said he didn’t waste any time worrying about what Redden posted.

“That’s on him,” he said. “May peace be with him. I worry about me, so I’m not worried about what he has to say.” . . .

Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy is defending himself against allegations that he abused his 6-year-old son. He is calling the allegations “ridiculous” and says they’re being made by people with something to gain.

McCoy spoke after practice, a day after being called “a monster” by his son’s mother in a court document filed in Georgia.

Stephanie Maisonet said she agreed to defend McCoy against allegations of abuse made by his ex-girlfriend even though she said she knew the accusations to be true. Maisonet said she made the deal only after McCoy offered to drop a custody case.

Falcons’ Jones hurt

Wide receiver Julio Jones, held out of practice with a calf injury, has joined the Atlanta Falcons’ long list of injured players.

Running back Devonta Freeman (right knee), who missed last week’s win over Carolina, and defensive ends Takk McKinley and Derrick Shelby, who have groin injuries, also did not practice . . . .

Browns top receiver Jarvis Landry is questionable to play in tonight’s game against the New York Jets because of a knee issue . . . .

Denver quarterback Case Keenum sat out practice with a sore knee . . . .

The Jets waived wide receiver ArDarius Stewart, who served a two-game suspension to start the season.
