Rachel Mitchell, the prosecutor chosen by the GOP to lead the questioning of Christine Blasey Ford, said she would not prosecute Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh based on the evidence she heard during Thursday’s hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

After the hearing, Mitchell privately briefed Republican senators, saying that based on the evidence with which she was provided, she would not prosecute Kavanaugh, according to a Washington Post article.

Mitchell was handpicked to lead the questioning of Ford, who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault when both of them were in high school. A career prosecutor, Mitchell maintained a business-like manner during the hearing. Mitchell asked Ford everything about the incident, from small details to any inconsistencies in the story. However, Ford assured her she was “100 percent” certain that it was Kavanaugh who assaulted her.

Mitchell, who specializes in prosecuting sex crimes, serves as the deputy county attorney in the Maricopa County, Ariz., attorney’s office in Phoenix. Mitchell built a career out of investigating sex crimes and interviewing victims. Republicans announced on Tuesday that she had been hired to question Ford.

In a statement released Tuesday by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, County Attorney Bill Montgomery said, “The American people can be confident that Rachel Mitchell’s experience as a conscientious prosecutor, trained to seek justice, protect victims, and pursue truth will assist the Senate Judiciary Committee in performing its important task.”
