Range Rover Sport takes it all on

-

Fit for the Queen — but maybe better suited for legendary British racer Jackie Stewart — the 2018 Range Rover Sport SVR is a formidable luxury sports utility.

The deep-throated, exhaust-popping 575-hp supercharged V-8 set in Dynamic drive mode is nothing short of an exhilarating ride. Tight shift points in the 8-speed transmission spinning 22inch Conti summer tires mounted on blacked-out alloys, SVR four-corner electronic air suspension, all-wheel-drive and pure steering response are just some of the features easily coaxed out of this premium ride.

The full-size SVR (Special Vehicle Racing) SUV has room to spare in the cabin for 5 people gear and toys including a tow package capable of 6,613 lbs.

Not for the faint of heart, the instant accelerator response will push you into the seats, some reports say 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, while quickly pacing into traffic — but check your rearview to see if the trailer is still hitched if you’re towing. The all-wheel drive provides a sure-footed ride with the Range Rover’s familiar terrain mode selector switch to set your SVR for any form of off-roading.

Our fully loaded $131,400 tester features several carbon fiber components, includ-

ing the hood. Not to worry though, as you can get into a base Sport for just over $66,000. The SVR comes with a black gloss two-tone paint scheme that shows off the delicate crosshatching of the lightweight material, causing a friend to note that a glance it gives the truck a nod to a “Star Wars” character.

The machine that made its name as the ultimate bushwhacker easily cleans up for date night. Status be darned though as its savannah (or galatic) wandering heritage aches to be used. It’ll not be wasted in oft harsh New England winters conditions.

The luxurious fit and finish that has made Range Rover SUVs so desired does not miss a beat with the SVR. Elegant diamondstitched Windsor leather seats and leather-trimmed panels greet you as you slide in. The digital dash has several configurations to choose from to suit your driving needs and the large touch screen infotainment center is well-positioned. Crisp, clean sound booms from the 825-watt Meridian stereo and the cell reception is spot on.

Fit and finish go a step beyond with a cooler built into the center console while the several cup holders and cubbies will come in handy while on a trek. Our tester sported the panoramic sunroof while providing a quiet, stress-free ride. As with any SUV worth its salt, several sets of USB and other connectivity ports are available. Well-outfitted with a full array of popular safety features, the 360-degree parking assist stood out.

Range Rover’s distinctive elegant lines make for a simple but graceful curb appeal. Just a tad understated, the split grille flows past fendermounted louvers and finish with an air dam on the hatch lid and four chrome-framed exhaust ports.

The SVR certainly is regarded as one of the top choices for premium SUVs which includes some excellent competition such as the BMW X5m, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the Jeep Cherokee SRT.’
