Third-ranked Clemson rescues late win over ’Cuse

With new starting quarterbac­k Trevor Lawrence knocked out of the game, Travis Etienne scored on a 2-yard run with 41 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to give No. 3 Clemson a 27-23 victory over Syracuse yesterday in Clemson, S.C.

Etienne had three TDs and a career-high 203 yards rushing to bail out the quarterbac­k-depleted Tigers (5-0, 2-0 ACC). They went from having one too many starting-caliber QBs earlier in the week to not enough by the second half against the Orange (4-1, 1-1).

Alabama 56, Louisiana-Lafayette 14 — Jaylen Waddle returned a punt for a touchdown and caught two scoring passes, including a 94-yarder, for the topranked Crimson Tide (5-0) during a win over the Rajin’ Cajuns (1-3) in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Oklahoma 66, Baylor 33 — Kyler Murray sat out the first offensive series for the No.6 Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) then came on to pass for 432 yards and six touchdowns in a win over the Bears (3-2, 1-1) in Norman, Okla.

West Virginia 42, Texas Tech 34 — Will Grier threw for 370 yards and three TDs as the No. 12 Mountainee­rs (4-0, 2-0 Big 12) topped the No. 25 Red Raiders (32, 1-1) in Lubbock, Texas.

UCF 45, Pittsburgh 14 — McKenzie Milton threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns and the No. 13 Knights (4-0) extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 17 games, beating the Panthers (23) in Orlando, Fla.

Michigan 20, Northweste­rn 17 — Karan Higdon ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns as the No. 14 Wolverines (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) overcame a 17-point deficit to beat the Wildcats (1-3, 1-1) in Evanston, Ill.

Texas 19, Kansas State 14 —

In Manhattan, Kan., D’Shawn Jamison returned a punt 90 yards for a score as the No. 18 Longhorns (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) snapped a five-game road losing streak to the Wildcats (2-3, 0-2).

Michigan State 31, Central Michigan 20 —Brian Lewerke ran for two touchdowns as the No. 21 Spartans (3-1) survived against the Chippewas (1-4) in East Lansing, Mich.

Florida 13, Mississipp­i 6 —

Feleipe Franks threw for 219 yards and the Gators (4-1, 2-1) stunned the No.23 Bulldogs (3-2, 0-2) in Starkville, Miss.

Bucknell 19, Holy Cross 16 — Jared Cooper ran for 123 yards and a touchdown and the Bison (1-4, 1-0 Patriot League) scored 19 unanswered points then held off the Crusaders (1-4, 0-2) in Worcester.

Elon 30, UNH 9 — Davis Cheek passed for 258 yards and the Phoenix (3-1, 1-0) beat the Wildcats (04, 0-2) in a Colonial Athletic Associatio­n tilt in Elon, N.C.

New Haven 31, Bentley 27 — Ryan McCarthy rushed for 105 yards with two scores as the Chargers (4-1) beat the Falcons (14) in West Haven, Conn.
