Revs beaten badly by rival Toronto

The Revolution’s dimming MLS playoff hopes took another hit last night in Toronto, as Sebastian Giovinco, Lucas Jansson, Victor Vazquez and Marky Delgado

scored to lift Toronto FC to a 4-1 victory.

Cristian Penilla scored for the Revs (8-11-11), who still trail Montreal by five points for the sixth and last Eastern Conference playoff spot and have four to play to the Impact’s three. But D.C. United is now ahead of the Revs after its 5-0 win over the Impact last night in Washington, with two goals from Wayne Rooney.

United (10-11-8) are just two points behind the Impact (12-15-4), and three ahead of the Revs with five to play . . ..

Manchester United lost its third match of the English Premier League season, 3-1 at West Ham in London, to fall nine points behind the leaders. Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko and Marko Arnautovic scored for the Hammers.

Defending champion Manchester City took a 2-0 win over Brighton, with goals from Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero. In London, Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to rifle home a 20-yard curling shot in the 89th minute as Liverpool earned a 1-1 draw at Chelsea to remain tied atop the ladder with City.

Motor sports: Briscoe wins Xfinity race

Chase Briscoe won the first of two big NASCAR races on the new “roval” at Charlotte Motor Speedway, as he grabbed his first career Xfinity Series victory yesterday on the hybrid track of speedway and road course in Concord, N.C. Briscoe beat Justin Marks in the leadup to today’s critical Cup playoff race.

Yesterday was also a playoff race for NASCAR’s second-tier Xfinity Series but these drivers were really the testers for the big show, the Cup race. Four drivers will be eliminated from the playoffs today and it will be in part of the difficulty of the roval, an odd layout causing headaches for the Cup drivers.

Women’s hoop: U.S., Aussies in World final

Diana Taurasi scored 26 points, including hitting five 3-pointers, to help the U.S. beat Belgium 93-77 in the semifinals of the Women’s Basketball World Cup in San Cristobal de la Laguna, Spain.

Breanna Stewart added 20 points while Brittney Griner had 16 for the Americans, who will be trying to win a third straight gold medal at the worlds.

In the gold medal game, the U.S. will face Australia, which got 33 points and 15 rebounds from Liz Cambage to rally from an eight-point deficit to start the fourth quarter and beat Spain, 72-66. The Opals won the gold in 2006, the last time the U.S. didn’t win.

Misc.: Fognini reaches 4th final of year

Top-seeded Fabio Fognini reached his fourth ATP final of the year when he beat American Taylor Fritz 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-3 at the Chengdu (China) Open.

If Fognini beats Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic in the final today, he will become the first Italian to win four ATP titles in a season. Tomic dispatched Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-4, in the other semifinal . ...

Ken Tanigawa made a 30-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th at Poppy Hills for a 5-under 66 and a 2-stroke lead in the Pure Insurance Championsh­ip in Pebble Beach, Calif. Gary Hallberg, Marco Dawson and Tom Gillis were tied for second in the PGA Tour Champions event.
