Arthur Albert Hartung of Stoneham, former Woburn High teacher

Arthur Albert Hartung of Stoneham died Wednesday at the VA Hospital in Bedford. He was 85.

He was born in Long Island, N.Y.

He moved to Dorchester at 2 years old.

He was a 1951 graduate of Brighton High School.

Mr. Hartung was an all-scholastic selection in both baseball and basketball while in high school.

He served as a corporal and medic in the Army during the Korean War.

He got his bachelor’s degree from Northeaste­rn University and got a master’s degree later in education.

Mr. Hartung was employed as a teacher at Woburn High School for 32 years.

He was a feared hitter in the Boston Park League and holds several Park League records, including the longest and secondlong­est home runs and being the only player to hit a home run in every Boston Park League park.

He was inducted into the Boston Park League Hall of Fame in 1987 and was a mainstay for the Wakefield Merchants Baseball team.

He was inducted into the Inter City League Hall of Fame in 2011.

Mr. Hartung used his baseball skills to become the New England Ping Pong champion in singles and doubles for at least 12 years.

He had a great sense of humor that will be missed.

Husband of 45 years to the late Mary Jean (Snow), Mr. Hartung is survived by three daughters, Ellen Faulconer of Kingston, N.H., Alison of Sandown, N.H., and Amy Lowe of Westford; two sons, Christophe­r of Melrose and Andrew of Stoneham; and six grandchild­ren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick Church, Stoneham. Interment will be private. Arrangemen­ts by AndersonBr­yant Funeral Home, Stoneham.
