Devils rise over Oilers in Sweden

Kyle Palmieri, Travis Zajac and the New Jersey Devils left the Edmonton Oilers behind in their season-opener, showing the form that help them return to the playoffs last season.

Palmieri and Zajac scored two goals each to lead the Devils to a 5-2 victory yesterday in the NHL Global Series game at Scandinavi­um in Gothenburg, Sweden.

“We feel like we have a good group, we have a strong culture,” New Jersey coach John Hynes said. “We like we have an identity of how we want to play, the types of players we want, how we want to be off the ice. Those are really the things that matter. We want be a tough team to play against.”

Stefan Noesen also scored, Miles Wood had two assists, and Keith Kinkaid made 17 saves.

Canadiens 5, Penguins 1 — Paul Byron scored two goals and added an assist, leading visiting Montreal over Pittsburgh.

Byron had his first multigoal game since scoring a hat trick last December against Detroit.

Brendan Gallagher, Joel Armia and Charles Hudon also scored for the Canadiens, who snapped a fivegame losing streak against the Pens. It was Montreal’s first win against Pittsburgh since Al Montoya’s 36-save shutout Oct. 18, 2016.

Lightning 2, Panthers 1 —

J.T. Miller and Nikita Kucherov scored in the shootout and host Tampa Bay trimmed Florida.

Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo departed midway through the second period with a lower-body injury after teammate Frank Vatrano landed on his extended right leg during a scramble in front of the goal.

Sabres 3, Rangers 1 —

Conor Sheary scored two goals and Carter Hutton made 43 saves as host Buffalo dropped New York for its first victory of the season.

Captain Jack Eichel added an empty-net goal in the final seconds for the Sabres.

Predators 4, Islanders 3 — Viktor Arvidsson scored twice and visiting Nashville held on to edge New York.

Mattias Ekholm and Craig Smith also scored for the Predators, and P.K. Subban had two assists.

Senators 5, Maple Leafs 3 — Thomas Chabot had two goals and an assist, Craig Anderson made 34 saves, and visiting Ottawa topped Toronto.

Dylan DeMelo and Chris Tierney, who were among the players acquired from the San Jose Sharks in a trade for Erik Karlsson, also scored for Ottawa. Mark Stone added an empty-net goal with 24.3 seconds left.

Stars 5, Jets 1 — Jamie Benn had two power-play goals, Tyler Seguin scored another and had a goal at even strength, and host Dallas handled Winnipeg.
