North Cambridge holds a lofty ideal

- By MIRIAM SCHWARTZ

Walking by the red brick factory building at 22 Cottage Park Ave. in Cambridge, you wouldn’t guess it’s a part of history.

Or it could be, just as any turn-of-the-century structure in Cambridge could. But the structure, originally built in the early 1900s, was the former home of leading Iron Lung manufacturer J. H. Emerson Co.

The building was completely rebuilt for reuse as upscale, urban lofts in 2013, but retained a bit of that history as the Emerson Lofts. The architectdesigned units each feature a unique layout, plays on brick and beam and lots of sleek designer touches. This is exactly what you’ll find in Unit 6 of this coveted building.

The location? It couldn’t be more convenient in North Cambridge. You’re a short walk along the Minuteman bike path to the Alewife T stop or a 15-minute straight shot to Davis Square. A quiet culde-sac and proximity to countless restaurants and shops complete this ideal location, although drivers will enjoy the unit’s exclusive-use off-street parking space.

As expected for a loft space, you’ll enjoy an open floor plan with oversized windows throughout and an industrial-chic interplay between the heavy ceiling beams, polished, exposed ducts, original red brick and stunning wood flooring that blend seamlessly into the custom kitchen cabinetry. The high-end kitchen is designed with form and function in mind, granite countertops and a breakfast bar.

A generous master suite and swank master bath with a double custom vanity are bathed in light and can be dressed down to keep with a minimalist theme, letting the building do the talking, or dressed up — there’s plenty of space. The second bedroom and full bathroom are smaller, but make great use of the unit’s 1,025 square feet.

Unit 6 is in excellent condition — its previous owner used it part-time — and the building is professionally managed and maintained and includes access to a common patio area.

See the unit at open house hours from noon to 1 p.m. today and tomorrow.
